For H.324 Audio video conference Systems |
Question:
I'm always in a contest with myself
to come up with the dumbest question
of the week, here's this week's entry.
I'm trying to figure out some nomenclature,
a way to distinguish between two dissimilar
processes, which I am afraid often
go by similar or identical names.
Here are the two processes: Two-way
interactive conferencing with video
and audio, over the telephone network
(switched or dedicated); one-way down
linking of satellite-delivered remote
conference programming with or without
dial-up voice/fax-only feedback. The
terms teleconference, video conference,
and video teleconference seem to be
used interchangeably here, at least
as far as I can figure it out.
I'm currently tending toward calling
the codec thing 'video teleconferencing,'
and the satellite thing 'videoconferencing,'
but I'm open to alternative opinions.

I hate when people confuse audio teleconferencing
with video teleconferencing. Here
is the way I explain it.
Teleconferencing - this is your standard
audio
conferencing that pretty much everyone
uses.
Videoconferencing or video teleconferencing
- this is the video version of an
audio conference. Using two way video
over either a dial up line or using
the internet.
Satellite conference
- this is you satellite feed with
one way video and you can call into
them with either a audio
call or fax feedback.
Hope that this helps and more people
out there begin to figure out what
the difference is.
